Welcome to the Kinetic Edge Avanti
Plusbi-monthly newsletter.
In this
newsletter we will keep you updated on cycling events, news, and useful training tips to improve
your cycling.
With autumn
upon us it is now time to think about your visibilityon the
road. Be sure to:
Wear bright clothing
Have front and rear lights to not only see, but be seen. Remember flashing
lights are more visible than stagnant lights to cars.
The way we
ride on the road and navigate the trafficgreatly
improves our safety. A few tips to keep you safe:
§
Be predictable by indicating to
drivers so they know what to expect and understand where you intend to go.
§
When riding past parked cars look
for drivers sitting in the front right side, by glancing through the rear window. If there
is a driver in the car take a wider berth around the car, as they may open their
door.
§
On large intersections always ride
to the front of the traffic line so you have enough time to get across the intersection when the
light goes green.
§
When there is no cycle lane, ride
one metre out from the curb and hold a straight line on the road. If you ride
in the gutter cars are more likely to drive too close. If you have a “presence” on
the road they will then go around you. This also applies to riding on country
roads.
§
If a cycle lane has intermittent
parked cars in the lane it is safer to ride in the first lane instead of the cycle lane.
This makes you more visible to cars coming up behind you instead of popping in and out of the gaps
between parked cars in the cycle lane.
§
If a driver reacts badly to you
riding on the road, try to avoid reacting negatively in return. You never know how they are
going to then reply, or if you reply negatively how that will affect the next cyclist that
frustrates them.
Be
safe!

Dictionary:
Every sport has its
funny names for things and cycling definitely has a few! A common term used riding is “half
wheel.” This is a cycling etiquette term. When riding in pairs in a
local group ride you should always be inline with each other. If you are riding
staggered so your front wheel is well in front of your riding partner, this is called half wheeling
and is rude, so try to keep in line with each other!

Profile
Kenny Chia has no
limits. He is determined and inquisitive and this led to his first Taupo Solo in
4:30. Never one to limit himself he turned up to a club race last year which was a
handicap race. He missed the start and had to start 3 groups back from his mark,
which meant it was much faster but he didn’t waste time doubting if he could do it.
He just did it! Nice work Kenny. You inspire us all.
