Hira Forest

A great ride is the Hira Forest, a large area of exotic forest with lots of gravel roads, 4wd tracks and fire breaks.

Sharlands, Kaka & Maitai 1.5-2 hours return

Turn off the Maitai Valley Road at Sharlands Creek, cross the concrete ford onto Sharlands Road. Carry on up Sharlands Road for about 3km to the first junction, turn left and go straight across the next intersection. You will be climbing more steeply now up to a gate, go through the gate and turn left onto a grassy single track, (the higher one) This continues to climb steeply ( can be difficult when wet) to another gate and a firebreak. Continue along the firebreak towards the city, descending then climbing again until descending on your left to a clearing with a picnic table.Turn left at the clearing and enter a small section of single track which brings you out onto Kaka Road. Take care at the end of the single track as it turns hard right into some steep steps.

Across the road you have some options, The Maitai Track is a single track that will bring you back out onto Sharlands Road about a km above the ford, or you can turn left onto Kaka Road and follow this back to the junction with Sharlands Road and back to the ford. Or another choice is to turn right and continue along Kaka Road and then back down a long ride to the ford.

( Take care in the Forest and if you don’t know the area go with someone who does or take a map)
