Wanaka - Lindus Pass - Twizel
Wanaka dawned fresh and nippy. There was cool fog on the highway so when the van arrived we did
some drafting to stay warm and get along a bit between 35 and 45kms per hour usually. The driver
wore one of my wireless intercoms and I the other so we could coordinate the right speed. The
system worked better than hand signals which we had used yesterday.
We were covering big distances each day so a little bit of drafting here and there took the
pressure off. The Otago roads have much rougher surfaces than the smooth West Coast roads, so we
had sore hands when we were drafting due to the vibration especially if we hit 50km/hr on some of
the down hills where we sent the van away.
Neville and I biked to the foot of the Lindus and as it was cold windy and about 1.00pm we thought
lunch was a good option. By the time the van came we decided to hop in and go back for the other
tandem. It was decided to drive to the top of Lindus for lunch.
80kms 24.6 average 3 hrs 14 mins
We missed about 3kms of the final climb but enjoyed the down hill after lunch although it was
freezing. We will climb it all another day when it is not so cold and windy.
We did a bit more drafting here and there and then rolled into Twizel and found some accommodation.
Travelled 143km, max 81kms, Average Speed 29.5 (drafting brought the average up)
